How To Grow A Fiddle Leaf Fig

Who doesn’t love a great bonsai? Bonsai have grown in popularity amongst plant lovers of all experience levels. These miniature trees and plants are an excellent source of relaxation and add a sense of tranquility to any space. There are many different types of bonsais out there, but one of the more popular types come from the fiddle leaf fig family. While the fiddle leaf fig is a tropical plant native to western Africa, it can be successfully grown just about anywhere – with the right care, that is.

Proper Lighting

While some indoor plants can do well without sunshine, the fiddle leaf fig is not one of them. Your plant will need plenty of sunlight to thrive. Direct sunlight is recommended for this plant, but indirect light can also suffice as long as the plant receives a full day of light. Without proper lighting, your fig will grow leggy and bare as it struggles to seek out the light it requires. Placing your plant near a bright, sunny window is best.

A Cozy Temperature

Like many tropical plants, the fiddle leaf fig is not a big fan of cool temperatures. Ideally, you want your plant to be in a stable environment that remains above 60°F. Sudden temperature changes can cause quite a bit of shock to any plant, so choose your bonsai’s home carefully and keep in mind how the room may change with the seasons.

Easy on the Watering

In general, bonsai don’t require heavy watering. In fact, over-watering can be detrimental! Too much water can result in root rot which is a common killer of indoor plants. On the other hand, you definitely don’t want to starve your fiddle leaf fig of water either. You will want to keep it lightly moist, but not wet. When you notice the soil beginning to show signs of dryness, it’s a good time to give your plant a drink of room temperature water.

Pruning Your plant

All bonsai trees or mini plants should be regularly pruned to keep things neat and tidy. This is also where a lot of the fun is! You are in control of your plant’s shape and volume. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your pruning. Wires can also be used to manipulate the shape of your plant and create unique growing shapes. With a little creativity, you can truly create a one-of-a kind fiddle leaf fig.

Growing the Perfect Home Accessory

While growing a fiddle leaf fig may seem daunting, enthusiastic plant lovers of all experience levels can succeed in growing these wonderful plants. When it comes down to it, there is no ‘perfect’ way to go about it; growing a fiddle leaf fig is about the process and learning about your plant as you go.
